Wear Indicator

Condition monitoring you can trust – directly integrated into your coupling system.

MALMEDIE barrel roller coupling with the Wear Indicator on the outer cover

Overview

For barrel roller couplings, safety and reliability are supported by accurate and precise condition monitoring – the key aspect here is wear detection. The MALMEDIE® Wear Indicator enables fast, visual wear checks directly on the coupling.

All barrel roller couplings from Malmedie have a simple pointer mechanism and defined wear limits for each coupling size. Operators can assess wear status in seconds – without the need for disassembly of the drivetrain or the coupling.

Designed for demanding applications, the Wear Indicator supports predictive maintenance strategies and minimizes downtime. It is a standard feature on all drum couplings by Malmedie and an essential part of lifecycle monitoring.

How It Works

Easy Visual and Tactile Checks with Defined Limits

The Wear Indicator consists of a grooved pointer and a recessed wear notch. As the coupling wears over time, the pointer moves relative to the wear notch. When the groove on the pointer reaches the end of the notch, the maximum permissible wear has been reached.

The tactile check is particularly important in situations where the indicator is difficult to read visually. Due to limited viewing angles and confined installation conditions, parallax effects can make visual reading difficult. The tactile feedback of the pointer and notch provides an additional, reliable way to assess the wear status.

If this value is exceeded, the coupling must be replaced. For couplings used in applications with load changes (bidirectional loads), the maximum permissible wear is halved, as the coupling wears in two directions.

Options & Upgrades

Manual, digital, or continuous monitoring? You decide.

Every MALMEDIE® drum coupling comes equipped with a Wear Indicator. For operators seeking more advanced functionality, we offer:

Automatic Wear Detection (optional for sizes 6–62)

Provides a binary signal based on a proximity switch (worn / not worn).
